Fairing
A fairing is the exterior bodywork that covers part or all of a motorcycle's frame, engine, and mechanical components. Fairings serve multiple purposes: they reduce aerodynamic drag (allowing higher top speeds and better fuel efficiency), protect the rider from wind blast and weather, and contribute to the motorcycle's visual design.
Fairings come in several configurations. A full fairing (as seen on sportbikes like the Yamaha R1) covers the front, sides, and bottom of the motorcycle. A half fairing covers the upper portion with a windscreen but leaves the lower engine exposed. A quarter fairing is just a small windscreen and headlight cowl. Touring bikes use large fairings with integrated storage, while naked bikes intentionally omit fairings for a raw aesthetic.
For practical purposes, fairings significantly improve comfort on the highway by deflecting wind away from the rider's body. They also protect the engine and frame components from road debris and weather. The downside: fairings are expensive to replace if damaged in a crash or drop. A simple tip-over in a parking lot can crack fairings worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, which is one reason naked bikes are popular with new riders.
One thing many new riders don't realize is that fairings significantly affect handling in crosswinds. A fully faired sportbike acts like a sail in strong side winds, requiring constant steering corrections. Conversely, naked bikes are less affected by wind but offer no protection from rain, bugs, or road debris. If you're considering adding an aftermarket fairing to a naked bike, know that it will change the bike's center of gravity and potentially create buffeting at certain speeds. Many riders compromise with a small windscreen that deflects wind off the chest without the full aerodynamic penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do fairings make a motorcycle faster?
Fairings don't increase horsepower, but they increase top speed by reducing aerodynamic drag. A fully faired bike can be 10-15 mph faster than the same bike naked, and you'll get better fuel economy at highway speeds. The real benefit most riders notice is reduced wind fatigue on long rides, since you're not fighting air pressure on your chest and helmet.
Can you ride a motorcycle with a cracked fairing?
Yes, as long as no pieces are hanging loose or blocking controls, lights, or wheels. However, cracks can spread from vibration and wind pressure. Small cracks can be repaired with plastic welding or epoxy for $20-50, which is much cheaper than replacing entire panels that cost $200-800 each for OEM parts.
