Overhead Cam
Overhead cam (OHC) is an engine valve-train configuration where the camshaft sits on top of the cylinder head, directly above the valves it operates. This is the dominant design in modern motorcycle engines because it allows the valves to be operated more directly with fewer intermediate components, enabling higher RPM operation and more precise valve timing than older pushrod designs.
There are two overhead cam configurations. Single overhead cam (SOHC) uses one camshaft per cylinder head to operate both the intake and exhaust valves, typically through rocker arms. This design is simpler, lighter, and cheaper to manufacture, making it common on commuter bikes, cruisers, and standard motorcycles. Honda's CB series and many single-cylinder engines use SOHC layouts.
Dual overhead cam (DOHC) uses two camshafts per cylinder head — one for intake valves and one for exhaust valves. This allows the intake and exhaust valve timing to be independently optimized, supports more valves per cylinder (commonly four), and permits higher redlines because the valve train is lighter and more rigid. Nearly all modern sportbikes and high-performance motorcycles use DOHC configurations. The Kawasaki ZX-10R, Yamaha R1, and BMW S1000RR are all DOHC inline-fours.
The alternative to overhead cams is the pushrod design, where the camshaft sits inside the engine block and operates the valves through long pushrods and rocker arms. Harley-Davidson V-twins are the most famous pushrod motorcycle engines still in production. Pushrod engines are compact, produce strong low-end torque, and have a distinctive character, but they cannot rev as high as overhead-cam designs because the long valve train has more mass and flexibility. Overhead cam engines trade that low-RPM character for broader power bands, higher peak power, and the ability to safely exceed 10,000 RPM — with some sportbike engines reaching 16,000 RPM or more.
