Motorcycle License Endorsement

A motorcycle license endorsement (often called an "M endorsement" or motorcycle endorsement) is the legal certification added to your driver's license that permits you to operate a motorcycle on public roads. In the United States, every state requires some form of motorcycle endorsement or separate motorcycle license to ride legally.

The process for obtaining a motorcycle endorsement varies by state but generally involves: passing a written knowledge test about motorcycle-specific traffic laws and safe riding practices, and passing a riding skills test (either at the DMV or by completing an approved training course like the MSF BRC). Some states also require a minimum age (typically 16-18) and a learner's permit period before full endorsement.

Riding without a motorcycle endorsement carries serious consequences: fines, potential impoundment of the motorcycle, points on your license, and — most critically — potential issues with your insurance coverage. If you're involved in a crash while riding without proper endorsement, your insurance company may deny your claim entirely. Getting properly licensed is one of the first steps every aspiring rider should take.

One common misconception is that a motorcycle learner's permit allows unrestricted riding. In reality, permit restrictions vary dramatically by state and are often quite limiting — many prohibit highway riding, nighttime riding, carrying passengers, or riding outside your county. Some states require a licensed rider to accompany permit holders. Another critical detail: if you're planning to ride internationally, many countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your U.S. motorcycle endorsement — available from AAA for about $20, valid for one year.
